Philodendron 'Red Sun' is a vibrant and eye-catching hybrid known for its fiery red new leaves that gradually mature into a deep green with hints of burgundy. This tropical plant, part of the Araceae family, is prized for its bold coloration and glossy, heart-shaped foliage. Its compact growth habit and stunning hues make it a favorite among plant enthusiasts and a striking addition to any indoor garden.

Special Characteristics:

The standout feature of Philodendron 'Red Sun' is its brilliant red to orange new growth that transitions into rich, dark green as the leaves mature. The plant’s glossy leaves and compact, upright growth make it a perfect choice for tabletops or as a statement piece in a collection. While it’s relatively easy to care for, maintaining its vivid coloration requires proper lighting and humidity.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant red foliage. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may cause the red coloring to fade, leaving the plant more green.

  • Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause the leaves to wilt and lose their color.

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to maintain the moisture levels, especially in drier environments.

  • Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, aerated potting mix. A combination of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir or peat moss provides the drainage and root health it needs.

  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.

  • Pruning & Training: Prune to maintain the desired shape and remove any damaged or yellowing leaves. While 'Red Sun' has a compact growth habit, occasional trimming can encourage bushier growth.

  • Propagation: Propagate through stem cuttings, ensuring each cutting has at least one node and a healthy leaf. Place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.

  • Pests & Problems: Watch for common pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while low humidity may cause leaf browning or crispy edges.

Difficulty Rating: Easy to Moderate. Philodendron 'Red Sun' is relatively low-maintenance but requires consistent light and humidity to maintain its vivid red foliage.
