Philodendron erubescens 'Painted Lady' is a stunning hybrid variety, believed to have been created by crossing Philodendron erubescens with another Philodendron species. While the exact origins of the hybrid are unclear, it has quickly become a favorite among plant enthusiasts for its vibrant, colorful foliage. Native to the rainforests of Colombia, Philodendron erubescens thrives in humid, tropical environments, and the 'Painted Lady' brings a bold, artistic flair to any indoor jungle.

Special Characteristics:

The 'Painted Lady' is known for its striking, heart-shaped leaves that emerge in bright neon yellow and gradually mature into a mottled green with pinkish-red veins. The petioles (leaf stems) have a distinctive reddish-pink hue, adding to the plant's vibrant aesthetic. Its climbing nature makes it ideal for training on moss poles or trellises, and with proper care, it can develop large, show-stopping foliage.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vivid leaf coloration. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while low light may cause the colors to fade and slow down growth.

  • Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Reduce watering during the winter when growth slows.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to keep humidity levels up, especially in drier climates or during winter months.

  • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) and protect from cold drafts.

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir or peat moss will provide the aeration and drainage it needs.

  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or pause fertilization in the fall and winter.

  • Pruning & Training: Prune to remove leggy or damaged growth and encourage a fuller shape. Use a moss pole or trellis to support its climbing habit and promote larger leaves.

  • Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut below a node, ensuring at least one node and a healthy leaf, and place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.

  • Pests & Problems: Watch for common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause the leaves to wilt or develop brown edges.

Difficulty Rating: Easy to Moderate. Philodendron erubescens 'Painted Lady' is relatively forgiving and well-suited for beginners, though maintaining its vibrant colors requires consistent care in light and humidity.
