Philodendron Billienum is a stunning hybrid, created by crossing Philodendron billietiae and Philodendron pastazanum. This unique aroid combines the best features of both parent plants, offering vibrant, elongated leaves with a rich green hue and striking veining. Its bold appearance and manageable care needs make it a prized addition to any indoor plant collection.

Special Characteristics:

The standout feature of Philodendron Billienum is its large, paddle-shaped leaves with pronounced veins and a smooth, glossy finish. The hybridization brings together the elongated, elegant leaves of billietiae and the heartier, more robust structure of pastazanum. The result is a plant that is both visually striking and easy to care for, making it a favorite among aroid enthusiasts.

Care Instructions

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant foliage. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light may slow growth and reduce the intensity of its color.

  • Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause leaf curling or browning.

  • Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels, ideally above 60%. While it can adapt to average household humidity, higher humidity promotes healthier growth and prevents leaf edges from browning.

  • Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, airy potting mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir or peat moss ensures proper drainage and root aeration.

  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.

  • Pruning & Training: Prune to maintain the desired shape and remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Provide a moss pole or trellis to encourage climbing, which will promote larger, healthier leaves.

  • Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut below a node, ensuring there is at least one healthy leaf attached, and place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.

  • Pests & Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids. Overwatering can cause root rot, while low humidity may lead to browning leaf tips.

Difficulty Rating: Easy to Moderate. Philodendron Billienum is a relatively low-maintenance plant, but consistent care with lighting, humidity, and watering will help it thrive and showcase its stunning foliage.
