Hoya burtoniae is a beautiful trailing Hoya species known for its thick, fuzzy leaves and clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers. Native to the Philippines, this plant is a favorite among Hoya collectors for its unique velvety foliage and low-maintenance care requirements. When given the right conditions, it produces small, deep red to burgundy blooms with a sweet, honey-like fragrance.
Special Characteristics:
The standout feature of Hoya burtoniae is its thick, slightly fuzzy, oval-shaped leaves with a deep green hue and a reddish tint when exposed to bright light. This variety has a semi-succulent nature, allowing it to store water in its leaves, making it more drought-tolerant than other Hoyas. Its trailing growth habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or trellises.
Care Instructions
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to encourage healthy growth and blooming. Can tolerate some direct morning sun, which enhances its reddish leaf edges.
-
Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Overwatering is a common issue with Hoyas.
-
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels, ideally above 50%. While it can adapt to average household humidity, increased humidity promotes better growth and flowering.
-
Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A combination of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark ensures proper aeration and drainage.
-
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Use a fertilizer high in phosphorus to encourage blooming. Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
-
Pruning & Training: Prune to maintain the desired shape and remove any yellowing or damaged leaves. Avoid cutting off old peduncles, as Hoyas rebloom from the same flower stalks.
-
Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut below a node, ensuring there is at least one healthy leaf attached, and place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.
-
Pests & Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while low humidity may cause leaf curling or browning tips.
Difficulty Rating: Easy. Hoya burtoniae is a resilient, low-maintenance plant that thrives with minimal care, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced Hoya lovers.
