Epipremnum pinnatum 'Baltic Blue' Care Guide
Epipremnum pinnatum 'Baltic Blue' is a fast-growing, climbing pothos variety known for its deep green-blue foliage and natural fenestrations as it matures. This stunning plant is easy to care for and makes a great addition to any plant collection, whether trailing from a hanging basket or climbing up a moss pole.
Special Characteristics:
The defining feature of Baltic Blue Pothos is its rich blue-green leaves, which develop fenestrations (natural splits) earlier than many other Epipremnum species. Unlike Epipremnum 'Cebu Blue', which has a more silvery hue, Baltic Blue leans toward a deeper, almost teal coloration. As it climbs, its leaves grow larger and more dramatic, making it an excellent choice for vertical displays.
Care Instructions
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little may slow growth and reduce fenestration development.
-
Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Baltic Blue Pothos prefers evenly moist soil but is tolerant of occasional drying out. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
-
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity levels, ideally above 50%. While it adapts well to average household humidity, increased humidity can encourage faster growth and larger leaves.
-
Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Avoid exposure to temperatures below 55°F (13°C) and protect from cold drafts.
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A combination of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark provides aeration and proper moisture retention.
-
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
-
Pruning & Training: Prune to shape and encourage bushier growth. Provide a moss pole or trellis to support climbing, which will promote larger, more fenestrated leaves.
-
Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut below a node and place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.
-
Pests & Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while low humidity may cause leaf curling or browning edges.
Difficulty Rating: Easy. Epipremnum pinnatum 'Baltic Blue' is a resilient, low-maintenance plant that thrives with minimal effort, making it perfect for beginners and experienced plant lovers alike.
