Epipremnum aureum 'Manjula' is a stunning and unique cultivar of the popular pothos plant, originally developed at the University of Florida. This variety is known for its beautiful, broad, heart-shaped leaves with a mix of cream, silver, light green, and white variegation. Unlike other pothos, the leaves of 'Manjula' are slightly wavy, giving it a soft, flowing appearance. It’s an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned plant collectors.
Special Characteristics:
The standout feature of Epipremnum aureum 'Manjula' is its striking variegated leaves, each uniquely patterned with splashes and swirls of white, cream, and green. The leaves have a satin-like texture with slightly undulating edges, distinguishing it from other pothos varieties. 'Manjula' is a versatile plant that can be grown as a trailing vine, in a hanging basket, or trained to climb a moss pole.
Care Instructions
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant variegation. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while low light can cause the variegation to fade, making the leaves more green.
-
Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. Overwatering is a common issue with this plant.
-
Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity but is tolerant of average household humidity levels. For optimal growth, occasional misting or placing near a humidifier can help.
-
Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Protect from cold drafts and avoid temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A combination of potting soil, perlite, and coco coir or peat moss provides good aeration and drainage.
-
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.
-
Pruning & Training: Prune to maintain the desired shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy. 'Manjula' can be left to trail naturally or trained to climb a support.
-
Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut below a node, ensuring there is at least one leaf attached, and place the cutting in water or moist soil until roots develop.
-
Pests & Problems: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while insufficient light may cause loss of variegation.
Difficulty Rating: Easy. Epipremnum aureum 'Manjula' is a low-maintenance plant that’s perfect for beginners, offering stunning variegation with minimal care.
