Epipremnum aureum 'Champs-Élysées' is an exceptionally rare and highly sought-after pothos variety, admired for its elegant green and gold marbled variegation. Unlike common pothos cultivars, this plant is not widely collected, making it a true gem for serious plant enthusiasts. In addition to its striking foliage, Champs-Élysées features a fascinating trait—gill-like ridges on the undersides of its leaves, adding to its unique appeal.
Special Characteristics:
The standout feature of Champs-Élysées Pothos is its beautifully variegated leaves with swirls of deep green and golden-yellow hues. The marbling effect is more pronounced in brighter light conditions, enhancing the plant’s vibrant contrast. Another rare characteristic of this variety is the presence of subtle, raised ridges—often referred to as "gills"—on the leaf undersides, giving it an almost textural, sculpted look. Like other pothos, it is versatile and can be grown as a trailing plant or trained to climb a moss pole for larger, more dramatic leaves.
Care Instructions
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to enhance variegation. Can tolerate lower light conditions but may lose some of its vibrant patterns. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
-
Water: Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering, as pothos are prone to root rot if left in soggy soil.
-
Humidity: Thrives in moderate humidity but adapts well to average household humidity levels. Increased humidity may encourage faster growth and more pronounced variegation.
-
Temperature: Best grown in temperatures between 65-85°F (18-29°C). Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).
-
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A combination of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark helps with aeration and moisture control.
-
Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.
-
Pruning & Training: Prune to control growth and encourage bushier foliage. Can be grown as a trailing plant or supported with a moss pole for upward growth.
-
Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut below a node and place in water or moist soil until roots develop.
-
Pests & Problems: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while low humidity may cause leaf browning.
Difficulty Rating: Easy to Moderate. Epipremnum aureum 'Champs-Élysées' is a resilient but uncommon plant that requires thoughtful care to maintain its vibrant variegation and unique leaf structure, making it a prized addition to any collection.
